What A Negative Option Actually Is

The formal name for the pattern is negative option billing: your silence counts as consent to be charged again. A free trial converts into a monthly plan unless you cancel. A first order enrols you in autoship unless you untick something.

It is not automatically illegal. It becomes a problem when the terms are hidden, when the trial period is shorter than delivery takes, or when cancellation is deliberately difficult. The FTC has taken action against supplement sellers over exactly those practices, and its health products guidance is linked from the homepage sources list.

Weight products attract this model more than any other category, and the ingredient most often used to sell them is Garcinia Cambogia — the one whose own evidence is thinnest. A checkout built to hurry you past the terms is usually attached to a claim built to hurry you past the research.

The Eight Checks

1. Find the total, not the per-bottle figure. Large friendly numbers on the pack graphics are per bottle. The number that leaves your account is somewhere smaller.
2. Search the page for "recurring", "subscription", "auto" and "monthly". Use your browser find function. It takes five seconds and it is the highest-value check here.
3. Look at every tickbox before you scroll past it. Anything pre-ticked deserves a read. Pre-ticked upsells are the commonest version of this.
4. Find the cancellation instructions before paying. If they exist and are clear, good. If they are phone-only, or you cannot find them at all, that is your answer.
5. Compare the trial length against the delivery estimate. A fourteen-day trial with ten-day shipping is not a trial.
6. Read what happens at the end of the term. Automatic renewal at a higher price is common and it is usually disclosed somewhere small.
7. Screenshot the whole checkout. Terms, total, tickboxes. If a dispute happens later, this is your evidence and nothing else will be.
8. Use a card with good dispute handling. Credit cards generally offer stronger chargeback rights than debit cards or bank transfers.

The Warning Signs

• A countdown timer. It resets when you reload the page. It exists to stop you reading.
• "Only 6 left in stock." On a supplement warehouse, this is decoration.
• A crossed-out "regular price" nobody ever paid. A saving measured against an invented number is not a saving.
• Terms in grey four-point type below the fold. Deliberate.
• No physical address or company name anywhere on the site. The single biggest red flag on this list.
• A cancellation phone number with no email alternative. Phone-only exists to make leaving harder.

If You Are Already In One

1. Cancel in writing, by email, and keep the copy. A phone call with no record is not evidence of anything.
2. Quote the order number and use the word cancel plainly, without softening it.
3. Do not accept a "pause" or a discount unless that is genuinely what you want. It restarts the clock.
4. Tell your bank if charges continue after a written cancellation. Continuing to charge after that is a dispute you can win.
5. Report it. In the US, reportfraud.ftc.gov. Reports are what build cases.
